AS/NZS 3760 compliant testing for single-phase portable electrical appliances and equipment.
Single Phase Testing
Overview
230V Appliance Testing for Every Workplace
Single-phase testing is the inspection and electrical safety testing of equipment operating on standard 230V single-phase power — the normal power supply found in New Zealand homes, offices, retail st...
- Single-phase 230V appliances account for the vast majority of portable electrical equipment in New Zealand workplaces — and the majority of electrical test failures.
- Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, PCBUs must ensure all portable electrical equipment is maintained in a safe condition, regardless of whether it is single-phase or three-phase.
- Single-phase equipment is often moved, unplugged, and re-plugged frequently, accelerating wear on plugs, cords, and connections.
- Construction and demolition sites using single-phase equipment require 3-monthly testing under AS/NZS 3760 hostile-environment intervals.

PASSWhy It Matters
Why Single Phase Testing matters
Single-phase 230V appliances account for the vast majority of portable electrical equipment in New Zealand workplaces — and the majority of electrical test failures.
Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, PCBUs must ensure all portable electrical equipment is maintained in a safe condition, regardless of whether it is single-phase or three-phase.
Single-phase equipment is often moved, unplugged, and re-plugged frequently, accelerating wear on plugs, cords, and connections.
Construction and demolition sites using single-phase equipment require 3-monthly testing under AS/NZS 3760 hostile-environment intervals.
A single faulty 230V appliance — a frayed cord, a cracked plug, or degraded insulation — can cause electric shock, fire, or electrocution.
Common Issues
Common Single Phase Testing faults
Damaged power cords from frequent plugging and unplugging
Single-phase equipment is moved and unplugged more often than fixed equipment, accelerating cord and plug wear. Exposed conductors create an immediate risk of electric shock and fire.
Cord replaced on-site with correctly rated replacement, properly terminated with adequate strain relief, and item retested.
Cracked plug housings from impact or age
Live pins become accessible, creating a high risk of electric shock — especially in high-traffic areas like offices and kitchens.
Plug replaced with an approved heavy-duty replacement rated for the equipment's current draw.
Failed insulation resistance
Current leaking through degraded insulation can cause nuisance RCD tripping, equipment damage, or electric shock. Common in older equipment and items exposed to moisture or heat.
Item removed from service and documented. Repair or replacement recommended depending on equipment value and fault severity.
Overloaded power boards and extension leads
Daisy-chained power boards or overloaded extension leads cause overheating, melted housings, and fire. Common in office environments with limited outlets.
Overloaded configuration documented and flagged. Recommendations provided for additional circuits or redistribution of loads.

Inspection & Testing Intervals
Recommended inspection and testing frequencies based on AS/NZS 3760 for different workplace environments and equipment types.
Caution
This information should be read together with the AS/NZS 3760 standard as a whole, particularly Clause 2.1. Inspection intervals vary depending on equipment type and operating environment.

Important Note
Inspection frequencies depend on equipment type, condition, and working environment. Hostile environments require more frequent inspection and testing. Always refer to AS/NZS 3760 or contact our team if you are unsure which interval applies to your workplace.
Our Process
How Single Phase Testing works
Our streamlined process ensures every single phase testing engagement is efficient, thorough, and fully documented.
Site Walk-Through
Our technician walks through your site to locate and identify all single-phase portable electrical equipment, including items in offices, kitchens, workshops, server rooms, and storage areas.
Visual Inspection
Each item is visually inspected for damage to plugs, cords, casings, and connections. Items with visible damage are flagged before electrical testing begins.
Electrical Testing
Calibrated PAT equipment runs earth continuity, insulation resistance, and earth leakage tests on each item. Test sequences are automated and results recorded digitally.
Result & Tagging
Pass or fail result determined. A durable QR-coded tag is applied to each tested item. Failed items are tagged with a FAILED — DO NOT USE label and documented.
Digital Reporting
Full compliance report with asset register, individual test results, pass/fail summary, and photos of failed items delivered to your online portal within 24 hours.
What's Tested
Single Phase Testing checklist
Visual Inspection
Plugs, cords, casings, strain reliefs, and connections checked for damage, wear, heat damage, or unauthorised modifications.
Earth Continuity
Verifies the protective earth connection is intact with low resistance, ensuring fault current can safely trip circuit protection.
Insulation Resistance
Measures insulation resistance between active/neutral conductors and earth at 500V DC to confirm no current leakage paths exist.
Earth Leakage
Measures leakage current flowing to earth during normal operation to verify it remains within safe limits.
RCD Push-Button Test
Where an RCD is present, verifies the safety switch trips correctly when the test button is pressed.
Tag Application
Durable, colour-coded QR-coded tag applied showing test date, pass/fail result, technician ID, and next scheduled test date.
