Understanding AS/NZS 3760

A comprehensive guide to the New Zealand standard for in-service safety inspection and testing of electrical equipment.

Standard Overview

AS/NZS 3760:2021 specifies the procedures for the in-service safety inspection and testing of electrical equipment. It applies to all types of electrical equipment used in workplaces, including portable, moveable, and stationary equipment.

Equipment Classification

Equipment is classified based on the environment it's used in: Class I (earthed equipment), Class II (double insulated), and Class III (extra-low voltage). Each class has different testing requirements.

Inspection Types

The standard defines three levels of inspection: User inspection (daily/weekly), External inspection (periodic), and Internal inspection (detailed). Each level has specific requirements and documentation.

Testing Methods

Tests include visual inspection, earth continuity testing, insulation resistance testing, and earth leakage testing. Each test has specific pass/fail criteria and must be performed with calibrated equipment.

Tagging Requirements

Each tested item must be tagged with: date of test, next test due date, test result (pass/fail), and tester identification. Tags must be durable and clearly visible.
